Details

My name is Roni (also known as Jean-Francois by those who don't know me very well). In this site you will learn a lot about me. It will make you laugh. It will make you cry (unless you don't look at my pictures). You will learn a little about some famous dead people like Kafka, Feud, Einstein... But most importantly, and I assume that's why you have come here in the first place, it will teach you how to make pasta... I mean great pasta.

Name

I usually go by the name Roni. I am planning to put a sound file in this page that would demonstrate how my name should be pronounced, however I'm still practicing pronouncing it, so for now you can just call me Jean-Francois.

Hobbies

One of my main hobbies is photography so I encourage you to click on the thumbnails above to see the larger photos.

My mother's philosophy has always been "It never hurts to learn something new", so I embraced this philosophy at an early age and when I was only 22 years old, I already made my own pasta. (See Cooking Tips).

Some of my hobbies, in alphabetical order, are:

Athletic Accomplishments

In Elementary school I held the school's record in high jump.
I was also the captain of the basketball team.

In high school I was on the basketball, team handball and soccer team.

In college I was a member of the rifle team. I shot the highest score in a 3-position match in my first year in college. For some details read an
article published in the college's magazine

I won various other gold and silver medals in rifle and pistol target shooting matches.

I won 3rd place in a tournament that was titled "All American Open Championhip in Tae Quan Do, Karate and Kung Fu." This is the biggest martial art tournament in the country. It took place in Madison Square Garden, New York, and the results were published in Karate Illustrated magazine.

I won 1st place trophy 3 times in team volleyball (6 on 6) tournaments.

I won a 1st place in Mixed Doubles volleyball tournament.
(in case you were wondering whether "mixed doubles tournament" means playing volleyball while under the influence of mixed drinks... it's not. It just means i played with a woman. I like playing with women and I like women playing with me... but enough about volleyball!)

I played in a few tennis tournaments. The closest I ever came to winning was 4th place.

I also played in a couple of ping pong tournaments.

In 2007 and 2009 I ran a marathon. In 2012 I did an ironman race.

Intellectual Accomplishments

In 4th grade I was Ms. Nilie's favorite. She used to grab me by my hair in front of the whole class and say "Oyyyy....".

In 11th grade my Math teacher talked me into participating in some Math Olympics.

I co-published 2 papers on Computer-Human interaction. Click here for
more information.

I am the inventor of 20 computer software related patents.

I participated in two Backgammon tournaments and won 1st place and 2nd place trophies.

Sports

Energy=0 I'm not into weight lifting as much as most guys are these days.
Weight lifting is a futile attempt of breaking the law (of gravity).
Sometimes I try. I lift it once or twice... if it doesn't stay up...
I conclude that gravity is still upon us, and I let someone else give it a shot...

Currently my main sports activities, in alphabetical order, are:

basketball, ping pong, racquetball, rollerblading, skiing, tennis, windsurfing.

In 2003 I started doing Triathlons. In 2007 I did my first full marathon. In 2012 I did my first full ironman (in fact it was an Israman which is considered to be one of the most difficult ironman races in the world).
In an ironman race you swim 3.8 km (2.4 miles), then you ride 180 km (112 miles), and finally, before you pass out, you run 42.2 km (26.2 miles).
During my training and preparation for the ironman race i researched the nutritional aspect of the race, and created a simple web site, that hopefully would help other future ironman competitors. If you are planning to do an ironman race or any long race, such as ultra-marathon, half ironman, or even marathon, you can analyze and plan your nutritional needs
on this web site. Give it a shot. It won't cost you anything, and if you accidently click on one of the ads there, i get a few pennies ☺

Location

I live in the beautifulLos Gatos, California. I love this town. "Los Gatos" means "The Pussycats" because around the turn of the century there were many wild ones running loose around here, but nowdays they usually hang out around Los Gatos Coffee Roasting Company on Sunday mornings wearing bicycle shorts.

I think many of the houses around here are like works of arts (maybe not my house, but check out my neighbor's house). Everywhere you look you see mountains, trees, lakes (example). I like hanging out at the coffee shops and restaurants. I love the small theater that shows mostly foreign movies. Very few people smoke here and everyone is so nice and friendly and seems to be into bicycling, jogging and driving Ferarri, Porsche, Mercedes Benz, and BMW. There's a lot of free public parking. It's about 15 seconds from the beach... by plane, and about 15 minutes by car.

People seem to think that you need a lot of money to live in Los Gatos - well...
that's true. Here's a copy of my bank account statement.

Painting

I painted my first painting in college. It's an abstract that was done in reds and whites only. After finishing it, I decided I didn't like the red so I went over the red with blue. Women hate it. Men don't care.

Here it is:
My 1st painting (Go ahead, Click on it).

I painted my last painting at the beginning of 1997 after spending hundred of hours planning it on my computer. It came out completely different than what I had in mind. It's also an abstract. It wasn't supposed to be, but that's how it came out. Women don't like it. Men don't care. This one is for sale. Click here to submit your bid. Offers under $1,000,000 will not be considered.

I also painted the whole inside of my house in white on white.

Career

I do computer software, and some people, especially those whom have never worked with me, think that I'm very good at it.

My first real job, however, was working at my parent's Stationary store. I think it was called a stationary store because nothing was ever moving there. We hardly had any customers. Therefore, my main responsibility there was to get good at backgammon while working the cash register. This first career move enabled me to win a couple of backgammon tournaments while I was in high school.

My next job was working at my college's cafeteria for a summer. The most valuable lesson I learned from this job was that even if there is nothing to be done, your supervisors would like to see you busy. (And later in life, I would often wonder why everyone seemed to be so busy, yet nothing was produced...

My next job in college, at the age of 19 was tutoring math and computer science. The lesson here was: teach a person how to fish and you've given him food for life. Give the person a fish, instead, and you've given him food for just one meal (and yourself - a student for life).

At the age of 20 I started working for IBM doing computer programming and continued working for IBM for several years after I graduated and left at the end of 1996 to do my own thing.

Inventing

When I was a little kid my parents bought me a lot of toys. Every time I got a new toy, My friend would come over and we would take the toy apart to see how it works. I don't know why we did it. I think it was just curiosity that killed the cat.. the truck... the airplane... Why don't toys for kids come with re-assembly instructions?

My parents don't buy me toys anymore. But I still like playing with them
(after all, they are my parents).

I invented 20 patents. Most are owned by IBM and some by Etrade.

Reading

I love to buy and read books. I have a pretty impressive collection of books.

If a Genie popped out of a bottle and offered me 3 wishes, my first wish would be to be able to read instantly. There are so many good books out there and so little time...

The books that has inspired me the most are The Mind's I: Fantasies And Reflections On Self & Soul and Gdel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid both by Hofstadter.

The book that influenced my decision (just a little) to leave IBM ("not that there is anything wrong with them") was Big Blues - The Unmaking of IBM. Very interesting and informative book about making bad decisions.

The best short story i have read recently is Before The Law by Kafka

My favorite short stories author is Ben Hecht. (Who?)

(Not necessarily new) good books that I've read recently are:

Music

I own a Casio keyboard similar to this one , a Yamaha Soprano Recorder , a Yamaha Alto Recorder , and an accordion similar to this one.

My Hi Fi stereo system consists of the following:

I like Rock and New Age music. I can tolerate Classical & Jazz and, to a lesser degree - Reggae. I don't like Country and I hate Rapp.

I have about 600 albums on cassettes and about 150 CD's.

Movies

It doesn't take much for me to enjoy a movie. I can watch several movies one after the other.
I like comedies, dramas, fantasies, and some horror and science fiction.

I like directors Woody Allen, Mel Brooks, Hitchcock, Roman Polanski and many others that I can't even name.
My favorite actors are: Woody Allen, Dustin Hoffman, Jack Nichelson, James Woods (this guy has an MBA from Harvard!)
My favorite actresses are: well, they don't seem to be making movies anymore.

Movies (videos) that I've seen lately that I recommend:

If you saw a good movie that you think I would enjoy, please let me know by E-mailing me: zevEL -at- ronix -dot- com

Television

My favorite TV shows are Seinfeld and Beavis and Butthead. Since I don't have Cable (never had) and I get a pretty bad reception on my black and white TV I usually just "listen" to the Seinfeld show, and every once in a while someone would tape Beavis and Butthead for me. I also listen to Friends sometimes. I can't watch sports on TV because I get too anxious to go do it myself, and anyway, all sport events on my television set look like people skiing in "thick snow".

Travel

I like to travel and whenever I save some time and money I pack up and go somewhere. I've either lived or visited all the following countries except for one: Belgium, Canada, England, France, Israel, Italy, Spain, Sweden, United States. (Click on the links to see my photos from these countries (thumbnails are shown above).

In the United States I lived in California, Maryland, and New York, and I've also been in Florida, New Jersey, Hawaii, Texas, and Washington D.C.

Photography

As much time as I spend on this hobby I always wish I had more time for it.

My brother and I have set up a dark room in our parents' basement. Every time I go to NY to visit them I spend my nights in the darkroom.

I used to own the following equipment:

It took me almost a year to convince myself to buy the above equipment, but then about 3 months after I bought it someone (which later turned out to be the neighnor's teenage son) broke into my house and stole it.
I was devastated by this loss and actually went throug the "4 phases". For a few year I refused to buy any camera, but eventually I got over it.
Now I own the following camera, lenses and filters

I like taking photos of people, animals, and interesting things and places.

I think the most important ingredients for getting decent photographs are:

I used to scan my pictures and then "fix" them in Photoshop. Now, of course, i take them digitally. Recently I've been taking photos of nature, the sea and sunsets over the sea

Philosophy

An object at rest cannot be stopped.

Do we all perceive images and colors in the same way? Yes, if we are not color blind we can all distinguish between different colors, but how do you know that my reds are not your blues? That my triangle is not really your circle?

Simple songs take less time to learn and like but they don't remain your favorites as long as the ones that took you longer to learn and like.

...and my favorite new one:

When you are feeling low... so low that you have to reach up to touch bottom - whose bottom you touch makes all the difference. (Source: [email protected]).

Psychology

I like psychologists and psychology. I have almost as many psychologists friends as engineer friends (Don't forget I live in the heart of Silicon Valley!)

I have read many books about different aspects of this subject, including a few of Freud's. Even if you think he was wrong sometimes, you have to admit his theories are interesting anyway. I am always interested in knowing what makes each person tick, and why. It's possible that my fascination with psychology and Freud is because it and he are so closely related to sex.

I found the book Freud's Moses by Yerushalmi very interesting, and educational. It sheds light on Freud's religious/psychological beliefs and practices, and about his book Moses and Monotheism.

If you had an interesting dream and would like to get my interpretation click here.

Age

A lot of people want to know my age. Why? Because when I was in college, I adopted the "Don't ask, Don't tell" rule, as it relates to age. Why did I do that? I was 20 years old... you know how crazy kids can be at that age...

Does my age really matter? The most important thing is that I am old enough to change my own diapers and young enough to lose my attention and get bored when this becomes the main topic of conversation.

Sex

I get a lot of mail addrssed to Ms. Roni, so I guess some people think that I'm a woman. However, if you look closely at some of my pictures you may notice some indications that I am a guy. If you clicked on this link thinking that it will describe my sex life - you were right... it's all here.

Marital Status

Single. I've never been married and I have no kids, no dogs, no cats, not even a gold fish. Sometimes in the summer I have ants. When I was 22 years old I predicted that I would get married in the year 2012. I have recently started accepting applications. In the mean time my longest relationship has been with Niki, the German Shepard I had when I was about 6 years old ([email protected]). Yeah... we lived together for many years.

Colors

My eyes are brown-green. My grandmother has blue eyes so i'm a blue-eyes gene-carrier (picture me carrying my grandmother's blue jeans). My hair is brown and curly. My mother had red hair when she was young but then it turned blond. My grandmother had blond hair. My grandfather had gray hair ever since i can remember, he is about 80 years old and still has most of his hair. So there is a good chance that my hair will also be gray some day.

When I'm asked what kind of a car i drive, my standard reply is: "A gray one!"
My favorite color is... blue for oceans, lakes, and skies, white when it comes to teeth, and black and white photography. I usually wear dark clothes.

Did you know that Yul Brenner(?) wore black all the time because someone once told him that he looks good in black?

Cooking Tips

Cooking is not my favorite way to pass time. Cooking pasta is a great way to pass time. It even sounds the same (say it "Passss-ta", "passss-Time"). I've done many experimentspasta and I'd like to share the results of my creativity in the kitchen with the people who were nice enough to visit my site:

Tip #1: Using Proper Kitchen Tools

What do you do if you have a ready to eat frozen lasagna in your freezer, you are hungry as hell, and all you want is a piece of it? (Hint: thawing the whole thing takes a long time).

Instructions:

  1. Pour yourself a glass of red wine. (white wine is ok if the lasagna is meatless)
  2. Take off your shirt - you're about to sweat a little.
  3. Get your Frozen Lasagna Saw. (I bought mine at Home Depot)
  4. Spread your legs for proper balance.
  5. Begin sawing, occasionally sipping some wine.
Preparing Lasagna
[The cook, his food, wine, and tools]
[closeup]

Tip #2: How to make the best pasta in the shortest amount of time:

  1. Buy the best noodles money can buy. (Rule of thumb: The most expensive is often the best). I recommend buying fresh (refrigerated) noodles.
  2. Buy the best sauce money can buy. (Rule of thumb: The most expensive is often the best). I recommend buying fresh (refrigerated) sauce.
  3. Prepare noodles as explained on the package. For best results taste it every 30-60 seconds.
  4. Add the sauce to the drained noodles. Microwave to warm it all up.
  5. Use Tip #3 (below) if necessary.

Tip #3: How to make better food:

  1. Buy food/ingredients.
  2. Prepare food as instructed elsewhere.
  3. Add Cayenne pepper.

Tip #4: How to prepare a romantic dinner for two:

  1. Buy some microwavable Italian frozen food.
  2. Buy a couple of long candles. The importance of this cannot be overstated and will be explained in the next item.
  3. Do not allow your guest to come into the kitchen at any time while you're cooking. This is very important. That's why you bought the candles. Use the candles to enforce this. Fire, so discovered our ancient predecessors, keeps hungry animals away from the food. You can also use the candles as swords to keep your guest from learning your cooking secrets.
  4. Prepare food as instructed on the package. Preferrably before your guest arrives.
  5. Remove food from original containers and place in nice dishes.
  6. Serve with wine.

Tip #5: How to prepare 3 hard boiled eggs:

This method gurantees an outcome of 3 hard boiled eggs boiled to perfection.
  1. Put a dozen eggs in large pot of boiling water.
  2. After 3 minutes take one out, peel it and check the insides. If it's not done enough, get rid of it or eat it if you dare.
  3. Repeat step 2 every 2 minutes.
  4. Serve later... much, much later...
Cooking according to my Webster dictionary: 1 to prepare (food) for eating by subjecting to heat 2 to subject to heat or to some treatment suggestive of a heating process 3 to tamper with.

I think the third definition is the most appropriate one.
